Public information warning.

Public information films from my youth, I’ll let you guess which ones made me laugh, cry and shiver!

Dark and Lonely Water, oh yes I was scared!

That was Jimmy Savillile in his typical misogynistic mood. “It’s going to happen to a lot of you ladies ………… for some of you, the face you start out with in the morning, won’t the face you end up with by the evening.”

In a related Timelord vein, not an information film but an advert, I made my parents buy me “real” not store brand cereal for weeks so I could collect these.

This next one, I actually did this on a smaller scale, its a whole other post, my bedroom curtains were totally ruined….

One I remember very well and now see that its got added value as it stars the abusive (he’s acting) brother of that awful woman off Emmerdale.

Finally, I can’t finish this without mentioning Tufty.

Did you see his mum? She was so worried when willy the weasel got knocked down, she only went to look at him through the ice-cream van window. I suppose that back then it was difficult to change the camera angle!

Sadly, I couldn’t find any footage of the kids chasing the pigeons in the opening titles of the films made by the Childrens Film Foundation.

What are your memories of information films?

The one we liked best in my family was the one about learning to swim and included the line “Meet Mike, he swims like a fish”, a phrase we used copiously for years after.

I think I’m the only one who remembers the one for Hypothermia. There is a soldier staggering about in the snow, he’s caught hypothermia on exercise. It looks like he’s going to die but his mate finds him, gets him in a sleeping bag and gets in beside him to cuddle him and share body heat. It all works out in the end but that PIF gave me nightmares for years.

Also, loved the ones about “Charley says….”

I remember the one for hypothermia too Ms Mac. It had a very creepy tune. Was it not a helicopter pilot staggering through the snow? Gave me the creeps when I was a boy, still remember it to this day.

Here is a link to old PIF’s for those that are interested. (Brings back childhood memories for me).
