Hacked!

July 27, 2009

On Friday or Saturday, something went wrong and this here blog thing of mine upped and died.

It turns out some hidden iFrame links had been injected into some of my pages and this caused the problems.

There is some info here if you think you could use it.

Re-installing clean code to my servers should have been an easy job, except I panicked and deleted things too soon, causing me all sorts of grief with the SQL databases. Still it’s a learning curve isn’t it? The upside being that I know a lot more than I did before.

I suppose that a second upside is that its given me a reason to blog!

So like, Yay! it’s a win/win. NOT!

I actually have loads to blog about but sadly have little inclination to do so. I only discovered the problem when I went to blog on Saturday, the subject being me notching up another year as a non-smoker. I may still make a retrospect posting to commemorate that little milestone πŸ™‚

Another day, another OS

August 20, 2008

Today, I got a little sidetracked in my search for a groovy new operating system. Inspired by The Lovely Jonathan, I tried out Mac OS 10. I know! On Intel-type PC hardware!

Remember the old days when the Mac peeps were all like, “oh, yeah Macs are better cos they run on superior Processors and hardware.” Well, not any more, you see the recent generation of Mac have been quite happily running on Intel processors for some time. So its perhaps not surprising that people are now coming up with ways to run the Mac OS on PC’s they have put together themselves at a fraction of the cost of a Mac. They call them Hackintosh.

I chose a DVD image called Kalyway, which is Mac OS 10.5.2. It was very easy to get it going as you can see here.

Once it was finished it was like, totally like a Mac. Which I shouldn’t have been surprised about since that is what it was! Connecting to my mobile by bluetooth confirmed this, announcing the connection as Andy’s Mac Pro πŸ™‚

I wish I taken a picture after I changed the desktop to the grass wallpaper 😦 I have the grass wallpaper on my PC at the moment so I’m quite fond of it.

I’m not a total novice, a few years ago I used to use an iMac at work, so some things came flooding back and others, like the Dock, were brand new.

So what did I make of OS 10 ?

Plus points were the start up speed, wow it was fast. The Dock is pretty cool, I’m deffo getting me one of those for my PC πŸ™‚

Downside? One of the things that came flooding back was the way the applications dont have their own menu across the top. Instead, whichever app is in focus has its menu on the task bar at the top of the screen. It feels disconnected and (I think) its annoying. Overall, it feels restricted, perhaps thats just me, but its all very Apple controlled isn’t it?

It’s gone now, (I’m already onto my next install) but the deciding factor? No support for my ethernet or wireless connections, plus I dont have all the apple keys on my keyboard which affects the usability.

So, in summary, MacOS 10 (or X if you prefer) isn’t the one for me, but I can see why people like it πŸ™‚

Next stop, Mandriva……..

Greedy Geek

August 6, 2008

A few weeks ahead of the new season starting here in the UK, I’ve got hold of* the first 4 episodes of Stargate Atlantis.

I got them on Sunday and had already watched them all by the time I went to bed last night. How greedy am I? Now I’m all sad that they’re gone. Oh, why couldn’t I have rationed myself to one per week, and just been happy that I was weeks ahead of the UK? Oh no, not this greedy geek!

I discovered this morning that the upcoming Stargate Continuum movie was available ahead of its mid-August DVD release.

So of course, I had to get* it. The sensible thing to do now would be to save it, maybe for the weekend. That would be good, except of course, shortly after I’ve posted this and been and brought a beer, I’ll be watching that Lion roar and the credits start rolling. Greedy geek!

I’ll never learn!

*Don’t ask me how, I’m not sure it’s even legal to mention downloading anything these days!

I want candy

July 26, 2008

Remember the 80’s Bow Wow Wow (The future of pop, ooops no they weren’t) and their single “I want candy?” At the time the shaved headed 14 year old girl was a bit shocking but the Internet has changed everything, what do you make of this?

“Yeah, a candy penis!”

Still hungry for more, maybe its like car crash TV, you cant tear your eyes away?

Barbie Girl…..

At least they are not out on the streets spitting on grannies and kicking dogs and stuff!

Just a very quickie, horrible I know :-)

A present from Cyprus

April 24, 2008

I woke up yesterday morning feeling a little stiff. My ankle felt like I’d slept on it funny and was quite difficult to get out of bed. I walked it off around the pool, thinking it would be ok once I got it moving again. By the time we were at the Airport it was feeling a little stiffer and again I shrugged it off, no way I’m going to be refused travel by asking to see a Doctor!

Landing in Manchester, I was in agony, the damn thing had seized up completely and it was a real struggle getting home, I just tried to sleep as much as possible in the taxi. I took some painkillers once we got home and then went straight to bed.

Paul badgered me about seeing someone this morning, the swelling was getting worse and I then remembered the bite on my ankle. He was sure this had something to do with the swelling, I had to agree at this stage, (I’m not good about being poorly) so eventually he won me over and we went to the Hospital walk in centre.

Turns out it’s quite common, the Nurse I saw had worked in Cyprus, and she was quick to diagnose a Spider bite. A prescription for antibiotics and antihistamines was quickly filled and I was in and out in 20 minutes. I was actually pretty impressed by the NHS service.

Here is a lovely illustration of the swelling πŸ™‚ I can’t put any weight on it at all now and am reduced to hopping around the house in a very undignified manner.

Ankle

As I write, I think its actually swollen by half again over the last few hours. If it starts going funny colours or anything I’ll be sure to get more photos!

Of course, this all means that I’ll be taking a few days off work, my first sick time since September 2002.

Daytime telly is already driving me to despair, thankfully I have a few items in the Sky+ planner to catch up on. Oh, and the Internet, thank god for the Internet, anyone for Scrabulous??

sleeping tramps

April 15, 2008

If you know me at all, you’ll know that I have a fondness for taking some rather odd photos, be it ladies with Bikini trouble, naked sunbathers or even my dinner, I’ll have ’em all πŸ™‚

I’ve been thinking of an idea for a new gallery type of thing, inspired by a selection of my photos featuring drunken vagrants. A few days ago I finally settled on a name and took the plunge with

sleepingtramps.co.uk

So now I have the name and a little idea about some sort of anyone-can-upload-a-photo type thing.

Any other ideas??
